THE NATIONAL ENGLISH ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION 2015

The English-Speaking Union Ukraine has great pleasure in announcing the National Essay Writing Competition 2015 “My Magna Carta”.

Magna Carta is one of the most famous documents in the world. Originally issued by King John of England as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215, Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. Although nearly a third of the text was deleted or substantially rewritten within ten years, and almost all the clauses have been repealed in modern times, Magna Carta remains a cornerstone of the British constitution. There remain four copies of the original Magna Carta; one of which is located in Lincoln cathedral, one is in Salisbury Cathedral, and two are in the British Library in London. Magna Carta has provided a source of inspiration and debate for centuries now, and is still highly symbolic of the rights of the individuals and the limits on the power of those who rule.

The competition is open to Ukrainian school and university students (aged 16-18) in full-time education at the time of the competition.

Each competitor should create their own Magna Carta fit for the 21st Century, in other words,
