Meeting with HMA Mr. Simon Smith

Category: Information

On Wednesday, 27 May students of Kirovograd State Pedagogical University had a wonderful opportunity to meet with the British Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Simon Smith. This is the second visit of Mr. Smith to our university.

Mr. Smith, one of the most open and friendly person I have ever met, started the meeting with a little speech in Ukrainian, which pleasantly amazed the audience and made the students smile broadly. I guess, Mr. Simon Smith was rather pleased with the effect produced. Then HMA spoke about Ukraine and his job in our country. He expressed Britain’s strong support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mr. Smith also confirmed the UK solidarity with Ukraine.

However, most of the time HMA left for questions and comments from the audience. Having known that Mr. Smith studied modern languages at Oxford University, we all could not resist asking a lot of questions about languages: favorite ones, tough ones, beautiful ones. We also wanted to know his opinion on what he personally considers to be the most difficult in a foreign language acquisition. And it turned out, that for HMA it is listening comprehension.

Mr. Simon Smith answered all our questions with such enthusiasm and cheerfulness that it was inspiring and almost contagious. He also shared with us some embarrassing and funny moments in his job as an ambassador in different countries. Mr. Smith has a terrific sense of humour and during his speech the audience often burst into laughter. While listening to HMA we were excited to know him as a usual person, just the same as we are. Besides his work he finds time for having fun, reading, playing the piano and trombone, cooking, playing his favourite game cricket and learning new languages.

The atmosphere of the meeting was very positive and friendly. There was no sign of coldness or restraint, that one might expect from a typical Englishman.  Even if anybody had had any stereotypes about it, they all vanished during the meeting. We greatly enjoyed communicating with HMA Mr. Simon Smith and felt privileged to welcome him as the guest at our university. We are looking forward to seeing Mr. Smith in Kirovograd again!
