Shakespeare Competition 2016

The 21st of April, 2016 witnessed 65 young and talented reciters delivering the sonnets of one of the most well-known poet, playwright and actor of our history, William Shakespeare. Ukrainian Shakespeare Competition is an annual event initiated and run by the English-Speaking Union Ukraine to honour the prominent artist as well as to find new talents among the Ukrainian youth.

         Ukrainian Shakespeare competition is held yearly on the eve of William Shakespeare’s birthday at the assembly hall of Kirovohrad Volodymyr Vynnychenko State Pedagogical University. To apply for the competition one should download a registration form from the official ESU Ukraine site, fill it in and send it by email to the address given on the site. The competition rules are simple: you choose one of the Shakespeare’s sonnets (the list of sonnets you can also find on the ESU official site), learn it by heart and present it in front of the public without any visual and audio aids.

The competition provides a great platform to display the knowledge and skills students have. At the beginning of this year competition Rector of KSPU, Oleg Semeniuk welcomed the students focusing on the great importance of the competition for academic and personal growth of a young personand its role in developing  students’ ideas and public speaking skills.

This year’s competition was exceptional not only because of the biggest number or participants ever taken part in the event, but because of the visit of the members of the ESU Germany Howard and Gabriele Kroch, who were honourable guests and the judges of the Shakespeare Competition 2016. The Chairman of the ESU Germany Howard Kroch greeted the participants saying, that the competition plays a great role in motivating students to perform and to excel and offers more rewards than just winning a prize, it can give an opportunity to gain  substantial experience, showcase skills, analyze and evaluate outcomes and uncover personal aptitude.

         The competition was a great success. The audience highly appreciated all the efforts made by the participants and gave them rounds of warm applauses. Olena Zabedilina, a 1 year student Kirovograd State Pedagogical University won the I prize. The II place took Karina Lavrinova from Kirovograd School 20, and the III place – NataliiaVovchenko and Olena Chernenko, 1 year KSPU students. All the winners were awarded with the prizes from the  ESU Ukraine and the Charity Fund of Yaroslav Bublik. Moreover, each of them was given presents by the Rector of KSPU and received a special gift from the ESU Germany.

         Ukrainian ESU Shakespeare Competition along with a number of other events organised by the ESU Ukraine is a great possibility to develop English speaking and declamatory skills as well as to get priceless experience, to make friends and open new horizons which would definitely benefit your student life. A visit of the ESU Germany members

On 20-21 April, 2016 Kirovohrad State Pedagogical Volodymyr Vynnychenko University received the Chairman of the English-Speaking Union Germany Howard Kroch accompanied by his wife , the member of the ESU, Gabriele Kroch, who were invited to visit the university by the ESU Ukraine. On Wednesday morning, April 20, 2016 Howard and Gabriele Kroch met with the Rector of KSPU and the Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, there was also a meeting with the members of the ESU Ukraine.

The guests from Germany had classes with  the students  of the Faculty of Foreign Languages. Mr.Kroch made a presentation  in English about the banking system in Germany. The next day he discussed  cultural differences between the Western and Oriental World. Gabriele Kroch spoke in German  on the peculiarities of the secondary education in Germany. She also discussed with the students  the prospects of Ukraine in EU, particularly, the referendum in the Netherlands on Ukraine’s integration to the EU. After the lectures, students had an opportunity to exchange their opinions and views with the ESU Germany members on various topics dealing with the life in Ukraine and Germany.

On Thursday, April 21, 2016 Howard and Gabriele Kroch were in the judging panel at  the annual Shakespeare Competition, held by the ESU Ukraine. Kirovograd Oblast school and university students recited Shakespeare’ sonnets. The competition was a success and the guests enjoyed it a lot. Mr. Kroch awarded the winners with the books from the ESU Germany.  In the afternoon the guests  accompanied by the students  Yana Budko (4 year student, German translation department), Anna Tsymbalist (2 year  student, German department), Anna Alyoshyna and Dmytro Lutskyi (6 year students, German department) visited KSPU archaeological museum, the science museum, the library and had a round city tour.

The visit was well organized and efficient. The students highly appreciated discussing various economic, political, educational and cultural topics during the classes and socializing with the guests from Germany after the classes. They got an invaluable experience and unforgettable impressions of sharing the opinions and exchanging views in a foreign language with native speakers, that inspire them to study successfully  and master English and German.

THE NATIONAL ENGLISH ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION 2016

The English-Speaking Union Ukraine has great pleasure in announcing the National Essay Writing Competition 2016.

The competition is open to 13-20 year olds from Ukraine, divided into 2 categories: Junior 13-16 and Senior 17-20 (age at closing date).

Each competitor should write an original essay in English on the theme: To have another language is to possess a second soul.”

The Deadline for submitting an essay is 30 May 2016.

 Essay requirements:

1.The essay  must be written in English.

2.The maximum word counts are 500-750 words for Junior entries and 750-1250 words for Senior entries.

3.The essay must be typed with double spacing, 14 point Times New Roman.

4.Your last nameshould appear in the upperright corner of each page of youressay.

5.The essay must be inventive and original, clearly and concisely written. 

We want to hear your individual voice in your writing, representing your own research and ideas.

6.If a quotation is used, be sure to identify the source of information.

7.Plagiarism will result in disqualification from this, and any future English-Speaking Union Competitions.

To apply for competition the student must fill in a registration form (take the form on the Website:http://www.esu-ua.org.ua).

The essay and a filled in form must be sent by email to the address: esu.ukraine@yahoo.com

The judges will assess the essays according to the following criteria:

  •        Contents, reasoning and evidence
  •        Development and analysis of  arguments
  •        Use of language
  •        Coherence, logics
  •        Structure

The results of the National Essay Writing Competition 2016 will be announced in September 2016 on the website http://www.esu-ua.org.ua. The winners will be awarded.
