Shakespeare Competition 2016

The 21st of April, 2016 witnessed 65 young and talented reciters delivering the sonnets of one of the most well-known poet, playwright and actor of our history, William Shakespeare. Ukrainian Shakespeare Competition is an annual event initiated and run by the English-Speaking Union Ukraine to honour the prominent artist as well as to find new talents among the Ukrainian youth.

         Ukrainian Shakespeare competition is held yearly on the eve of William Shakespeare’s birthday at the assembly hall of Kirovohrad Volodymyr Vynnychenko State Pedagogical University. To apply for the competition one should download a registration form from the official ESU Ukraine site, fill it in and send it by email to the address given on the site. The competition rules are simple: you choose one of the Shakespeare’s sonnets (the list of sonnets you can also find on the ESU official site), learn it by heart and present it in front of the public without any visual and audio aids.

The competition provides a great platform to display the knowledge and skills students haveAt the beginning of this year competition Rector of KSPU, Oleg Semeniuk welcomed the students focusing on the great importance of the competition for academic and personal growth of a young person and its role in developing  students’ ideas and public speaking skills.

This year’s competition was exceptional not only because of the biggest number or participants ever taken part in the event, but because of the visit of the members of the ESU Germany Howard and Gabriele Kroch, who were honourable guests and the judges of the Shakespeare Competition 2016. The Chairman of the ESU Germany Howard Kroch greeted the participants saying, that the competition plays a great role in motivating students to perform and to excel and offers more rewards than just winning a prize, it can give an opportunity to gain  substantial experience, showcase skills, analyze and evaluate outcomes and uncover personal aptitude.

         The competition was a great success. The audience highly appreciated all the efforts made by the participants and gave them rounds of warm applauses. Olena Zabedilina, a 1 year student Kirovograd State Pedagogical University won the I prize. The II place took Karina Lavrinova from Kirovograd School 20, and the III place – NataliiaVovchenko and Olena Chernenko, 1 year KSPU students. All the winners were awarded with the prizes from the  ESU Ukraine and the Charity Fund of Yaroslav Bublik. Moreover, each of them was given presents by the Rector of KSPU and received a special gift from the ESU Germany.
